Descriptive Data
TypeOrganisationOther NamesWellington City Centre for the ElderlyDate Range1986-2008DescriptionFrom 1971 the Inner City Mission led a pensioner's day care style centre on Nairn Street at the Green Cottage. Due to the building becoming no longer fit for purpose and run down. a group of agencies expressed concern around no longer having an elder focussed community centre. In 1986 a business case was made following these concerns and a survey of older local residents was conducted, confirming strong support for a facility. This was put forward becoming successful, and on the 16th of December 1987 the City Centre for the Elderly was formally opening on Cuba Street. The Centre continued on a couple of other locations until in 2008 the Centre ceased to exist in its current form.
From the survey, the establishment of the City Centre for the Elderly would be for the use of those who do not have their needs met by other outreach organisations.
The purpose of the centre was to have three main components:
- a social purpose - a multi-cultural 'drop in' for those over 60 in the inner-city area with structured activites
- a resource and information hub for people over 60 throughout Wellington
- a service centre being a base for some health and welfare services, i.e. Meals on Wheels, social workers, podiatrists, hairdresser and district nurses.
Internal StructuresGoverned by a management committee comprising of older people and members of Age Concern
