The club was a voluntary organisation run by elected officers and a committee of members. The first meeting was held on the 21st August 1903. The first president was R C Hamerton.
In its founding years it was based on Kelburn Parade across from Victoria University's Hunter building, and then further up Kelburn Parade until 1968. In the late 1960s there was a proposal to move to a new location of Wilton and Albemarle Roads however this didn't occur. In 1968 there was an amalgamation with the Wellington Bowling Club and the remaining members played in Brooklyn at Tanera Crescent.
The women's bowling club, the first of its kind in New Zealand in 1906, was inaugurated in connection with the Kelburn Bowling Club and its rapid increasing membership. The men's club permitted the women to use the green every afternoon from 1.30pm to 4.30pm excepting Saturdays and holidays. In 1964 they became their own associated club playing on the same green. They also amalgamated with the Wellington Bowling Club in 1968.
