Archives Identifier00783Date Range1860s-1980DescriptionThis is a series of photographic prints held by Wellington City Library. The collection was developed by Hilda McDonnell, who worked in the New Zealand Room of the Central Library.

When a new photograph was received it was assigned an accession number (refer to Series 00784 for the accession registers), the number then being recorded on the back of the photograph. A copy negative was created (see Series 00138), which was then used to create a copy print, which was mounted on card and held in the library for the public to browse and request copies (Series 00157).

Not all of the photographs in this series have a WP number recorded on them, but given all the photographs in this series were transferred from City Libraries it as believed they were all donated to libraries, but not all accessioned.

The photographs also come from a range of donors; this has been noted where possible. A number can be attributed to the Early Settlers and Historical Association, who donated many photographs to the Library; others appear to have come from the Wellington City Council, for example from the City Engineers Department or Public Relations Office. Libraries also requested the City Photographer at times to photograph events or historic buildings.

Some of the images in this collection appear to be reproductions used for display purposes, rather than original prints, although this has not been confirmed. There may be duplication of items within the series and with images in Wellington Recollect (https://wellington.recollect.co.nz/) depending on the quality of the image both have been kept in some cases.MediumPhotographSystem of ArrangementMultiple accessions have been received, the original order of which is unknown. Potentially the content in accession 2000/75 was still work in progress, as many of the photographs are grouped together in envelopes with hand written notes such as "prints to be filed".
