He became president of the Island Bay Residents Association from the late 1980s through to the 1990s. He was involved in the creation of the Island Bay Festival and was it's coordinator from 1985 (when it began). This also led to the establishment of the Island Bay Enhancement Trust in 1994, the legal entity responsible for organising the Island Bay Festival.
He was also the president of Capital Performing Arts Inc for over 20 years, which was originally incorporated under the name Wellington Orphans Club Inc until it's name was changed in 1988.
