WCC, Transport Department administrative files (1st series)
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00062Date Range1906-1973DescriptionThis series is the multiple number subject file system created by the Tramways Department (from 1948 it was known as the Transport Department). The series was established in 1945, though papers from earlier file systems were carried onto these files. The series ends in the early 1970s when it was reorganised to allow the re-allocation of file sub-series that had fallen out of use, such as those relating to the tram system - see Series 00700.
The files contain evidence of operational, legislative, financial, and administrative actions of the Transport Department. The files cover such topics as the purchasing of trams and buses, hiring of staff, dismantling of the tram system, alterations to the bus system and the general day to day running of tram and bus services for the city.
The files are based on the 'Series System' (or multiple number subject system) where consecutive numbers are allotted to principal subjects. The principal subjects are subdivided by the addition of bar numbers. For example file 301 holds general correspondence on Tram Services, 301/1 holds correspondence on the Aro Street Tram Service, 301/2 holds correspondence on the Brooklyn Tram Service and so on.
