Archives Identifier00093Date Range1889-1903DescriptionThis series contains valuation rolls for the Seatoun Road District, which was amalgamated into Miramar Borough in 1904. They record information about those entitled to vote in local elections, in relation to the value of the property, under the terms of the Rating Act 1882. The law deprived defaulters (those in substantial arrears in their rates) of their right to vote.
The books are are printed with standard columns and headings and contain the following information: number on roll; occupier and owner details (surname, Christian name, trade or occupation; address; description and situation of property and area (acres, roods and perches); rateable value; and remarks. Entries are handwritten.
There are five volumes extant covering rating periods from 1st April 1889 to 1st April 1903. The title label on the last volume has been written over - 'Cancelled', and there are no items between 1892 and 1899.
The rolls are headed 'The Rating Act 1882' - First Schedule. Valuation for for the Seatoun Road Board for the three years commencing 1st April, 1882.'. After 1896 the legal reference headings change to 'The Government Valuation of Land Act 1896'. At the head of Roll number column is the added annotation, 'W. 111' for 1889, 'W. 113' for 1892, and 3/66 for later rolls. The cover label has the same wording but for the 1899 roll and onwards adds 'County of Hutt'. The volumes for 1898/99 and onwards contain rolls for two years, with many additions, corrections and cancellations for the second roll.
