Archives Identifier00591Date Range1900-1990DescriptionThis series contains the multiple number subject file system used by the Municipal Electricity Department. It was in use from 1949-1989, though papers from previous file systems were also placed on these files. The MED's files document the development of the electricity infrastructure in Wellington City as well as the more routine operation and regulation of that infrastructure. File subject matters range from electricity shortages, restrictions on water heating, street lighting policy, to the financing and staffing of the MED. It is a multiple number subject system similar to that used by the Transport Department, who the MED had previously had a combined file system with. Sub-series 1-88 are administrative in nature, 100-162 are technical and about the equipment used by the department, 301-380 cover financial matters and 400 are street lighting files. Within that, each sub-series are further broken up by subject.
