Archives Identifier00688Date Range1915-1947DescriptionThis series contains the remnants of the Multiple Number Subject file system used by the Tramways and Electricity Departments from 1928-1938. Papers from the earlier annual number system of filing (Series 00589) were placed on these files. Most of the files that made up this system have been either renumbered, placed on later files, or destroyed.

Papers that were originally in this system can be found in the later Multiple Number Subject system of filing (Series 00590), the files systems of the Transport Department (Series 00062), and the Municipal Electricity Department (Series 00591). Other papers from this system can also be found in the MED 500 Series Historic files (Series 00573).

It is not known exactly how the file system originally worked. There appears to have been at least four types of files, each with a different letter prefix: 'A' files – general administration, 'B' files – employment and employee related matters, 'C' files – Tramways matters, 'D' files – Electricity matters.
