WCC, Transport Department's administrative files (3rd series)
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00701Date Range1946-1990DescriptionThis series is the multiple number subject file system created by the Transport Department (from 1972 also known as Wellington City Transport). The file system of the Transport Department was reorganised in 1983 to allow the reallocation of several sub-series that had fallen out of use. The sub-series in this system are very similar to those used in series 00700 and many files that predate 1983 were carried into this one. The series ends around 1988 when a new file system was established. This later file series is not held by Wellington City Archives.
The files contain evidence of operational, legislative, financial, and administrative actions of the Transport Department. The files cover such topics as the purchasing of buses, hiring of staff, alterations to the bus system, and the general day-to-day running of bus services for the city. The files are based on the 'Series System' (or multiple number subject system) where consecutive numbers are allotted to principal subjects. The principal subjects are subdivided by the addition of bar numbers. For example, file 301 holds general correspondence on Bus Services, 301/2 holds correspondence on the Brooklyn Service, 301/5 holds correspondence on the Island Bay Service, and so on.
