Tawa Borough Council, Building Permit Registers
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00713Date Range1963-1988DescriptionThis series consists of registers documenting building permit applications made to the Tawa Borough Council from April 1963 until October 1988. Under the Building Bylaws the Borough Council was required to keep a register detailing all building permit applications made. The registers are arranged in building permit number order, permits being issued in date order. The following information is recorded for each application: - Building Permit number - Value of the proposed work - Owner of the property where the work is proposed to take place - Builder who will be carrying out the work - Address of the property where the work is proposed to take place - Legal description of the property (Lot and Deposited Plan number) - The area of the proposed work (initially square feet, later square metres) - Applicable fees and amounts paid. These vary over time but include the following separate fees: Permit, Plumbing and Drainage, Water, Building Inspection, Vehicle Crossing/Road Damage, Manhole Deposit, BRANZ Levy and GST. At the end of the entries for each month a tally is recorded breaking the total number of building permit applicants down by type of work, and giving the total value of the permits issued for that month. The breakdown in the earlier volumes is limited to new dwellings; alterations and additions; retaining walls, and swimming pools / signs / garages, along with the total value of the proposed works. Later there are additional more specific categories of work; by 1988 the monthly tally gives new dwellings; additions and alterations; garages, sheds; commercial work, SF Heaters and ‘other works’. There are no indexes to the registers (and it is unknown if any were ever kept) so the only way to access the registers is by date. If an approximate date of work is known you can then search the register around this time to see if there is an entry for the address being researched. This will then give the Building Permit number along with the above details. Customers researching the history of a property or building should start their research with Series 00124 [Tawa Property Files]; this Series is searchable by street address. Tawa Borough amalgamated with Wellington City Council in early 1989; at this point they adopted the Council’s permit system. It is not known whether building permit registers were used prior to 1963; no earlier registers were in the accession transferred to Archives when the Tawa Service Centre closed.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.17MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementBound volumes in chronological orderCollection TypeWellington City Council
