Date Range1978-DescriptionIn June 1978, the Parks and Reserves Department changed its name officially to the Parks and Recreation Department. Ian Galloway was Director and he reamined in the position until his death in 1986. Richard J Nanson was then appointed Director in 1986. A shift in direction occurred towards the late 1980s when Parks and Recreation became an umbrella for more services. The department was no longer concerned with just the horticultural needs of the city, but the development of the city from a cultural standpoint. The Parks and Recreation portfolio extended to the Summer City recreation programmes, community arts, cemeteries, libraries, the Art Gallery and the Michael Fowler Centre. In 1988, Parks and Recreation was organised into the following sections: Administration branch (responsible for records, wages, accounts, reception, secretarial, training, personnel) Parks Section (managed parks, reserves, street trees, cemetery, nurseries, zoo gardens) Recreation, Playing Fields and Swimming Pools Section (managed playing fields and swimming pools, organised recreation programmes and responsible for promotion and publicity for the entire department) Planning Branch (responsible for forward planning, town planning, property development and oversight) Landscape Section (responsible for preparation of landscape plans, town planning conditional use, draughting, designing/sketching)
