There is no universally accepted model for the U3A, and it was established in Aotearoa New Zealand by the late 1980s.
The aims of U3A are:
- to share knowledge and continue the education of people of the Third Age
- to provide activities and interests for people of the Third Age to enhance their wellbeing
- to encourage members to form interactive groups, both to share knowledge and to pursue active involvement in new fields.
As of May 2025 this branch based in Wellington had 1450 members.
Formed in 1991 under the name U3A North Western Suburbs Branch, on the 3 September 1993 they were registered as an incorporated society under the name U3A Ohariu Incorporated, on 31 October 2007 the society changed its name to U3A Wellington City and later became a registered charity on 30 June 2008.
