The group formed in 1991 originally with the name U3A North Western Suburbs Branch, in 1993 when the group was incorporated, the name changed to U3A Ohariu Incorporated, and in 2007 the society changed its name to U3A Wellington City, becoming a registered charity in 2008.
The University of the Third Age, is an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community.
The aims of U3A are:
- to share knowledge and continue the education of people of the Third Age
- to provide activities and interests for people of the Third Age to enhance their wellbeing
- to encourage members to form interactive groups, both to share knowledge and to pursue active involvement in new fields.
