Record Identifier2-4Record Part2Date Range1952DescriptionBlack and white photograph showing where Te Ika-a-Maru Pa was located.
There is an accompanying text: 'In 1819-1820 the long area [era] of peace which the Wellington area had enjoyed ended with the arrival of musket armed Nga Puhi and other tribes. To protect their ancestral lands, the local population at Te Ika-A-Maru Bay constructed this fortified pa for security. Although it is a puny affair when compared to examples of pas that can be seen in the Auckland and Taranaki Provinces, it never the less shows the ingenuity of the old time Maori as an engineer. The trench was originally 18 feet wide and 10 feet deep and the magnitude of the task can be appreciated when it is remembered that it was done with stone and wooden tools. A palisade fence would have run around the perimeter of the pa to strengthen its defenses.'MediumPhotograph - print
